I met Paulina in Rome while I was working with the photographer Gail Albert Halaban, right at the time when Paulina was traveling alone through Europe. Pau was sitting on the fountain in Piazza Navona that the artist wanted to capture. Gail needed the fountain cleared to get a shot without anyone around, so I approached her and said: “Excuse me… could you move for just three seconds, please?” Those were the famous—and “romantic”—first words we ever exchanged. Kindly, Paulina moved, and a few seconds later, seeing me struggling with the rest of the crowd, she came closer to help me. Fortunately, I had a break before the next session and invited Pau for a motorcycle ride around Rome. From that day on, we did everything we could to make our relationship work. This painting is about that first glance. I tried to remember how those beautiful eyes looked at me when I first approached her, and I wanted to represent, metaphorically through colors, who she was at that moment. What fascinates me about my series is that it focuses on who we are beneath the surface. Physically, Pau looks like the same person she was a few years ago, but if I painted her today, the colors of her abstract would likely be different. Over time, and by sharing our lives together, we have exchanged colors and let go of others—perhaps ones imposed by society or by our parents. As we grow, and with awareness, we recreate our own palette. P.S. In June 2025, I proposed to her at that very same fountain where it all began. She said yes.

Conocí a Paulina en Roma mientras trabajaba con la fotógrafa Gail Albert Halaban, justo en el momento en que Paulina viajaba sola por Europa. Pau estaba sentada en la fuente de Piazza Navona que la artista quería retratar. Gail necesitaba despejar la fuente para conseguir una toma sin nadie alrededor, así que me acerqué y le dije:
—Perdón… ¿puedes moverte solo tres segundos, por favor?
Esas fueron las famosas y “románticas” primeras palabras que intercambiamos. Amablemente, Paulina se movió y, unos segundos después, al verme lidiar con la demás gente, se acercó a ayudarme.
Por suerte, tenía un descanso antes de la siguiente sesión e invité a Pau a dar un paseo en moto por Roma. Desde ese día hicimos todo lo posible para que nuestra relación funcionara.
Esta pintura trata de esa primera mirada. Traté de recordar cómo me miraban esos ojos hermosos cuando me acerqué a hablarle y quise representar, metafóricamente, a través de los colores, quién era ella en ese entonces.
Lo que me fascina de mi serie es que se centra en quiénes somos más allá de la superficie. Físicamente, Pau parece la misma persona que era hace unos años, pero si la pintara hoy, probablemente los colores de su abstracto serían distintos. Con el tiempo, y al compartir la vida juntos, hemos intercambiado colores y dejado atrás otros que quizá nos fueron impuestos por la sociedad o por nuestros padres. Al crecer, y con conciencia, recreamos nuestra propia paleta.
